The Gate of the Feral Gods

Spoiler enforcement
Full spoilers for Book 4. This is the gerbil book. This is the gonorrhea book. This is the book where a deity joins your party while inhabiting a sex doll head. If you're not caught up, the AI cannot help you process any of that out of context.

The Bubbles

Floor 5 is 1,172 giant domes. Each dome is its own little world divided into four quadrants: Land, Sea, Air, and Subterranean. Each quadrant has a castle. All four castles must be captured in 15 days or you die when the floor collapses. About 150 crawlers per bubble.

Carl's bubble is full of under-leveled crawlers who, statistically, should already be dead. He has to lead an army of people who can barely fight to capture four castles, including one that flies, with no flight ability. This is the book where Carl stops being "a guy trying to survive" and becomes "a guy who makes other people believe they can survive." It's a leadership book disguised as a dungeon crawler. Dinniman does this constantly — hides the real story inside the loud story.

The gerbil incident

Carl avoids stepping on frenzied gerbils. The System AI does not take this well.

The AI responds by spawning an endless wave of gerbils until Carl complies. It awards the achievement: "You're the Reason Why Daddy Drinks!" Katia describes this as "the equivalent of a psycho ex-boyfriend going nuts and trying to murder you and your entire family because of something you didn't even know you did."

The AI is not just snarky anymore. The AI has needs. The AI has preferences. The AI is throwing a tantrum because Carl didn't step on small animals in the right order. This is either a malfunction or a personality. By Book 7, you'll know which one.

Samantha

Samantha (Psamathe) is a banished lesser deity of Unrequited Love who currently inhabits a decapitated Lika sex doll head. She joins Carl's party on this floor. She is the mother of Mrs. Ghazi, a sand ooze boss. She is articulate, cunning, and deeply weird.

The AI acknowledges that "banished deity inhabiting a sex doll head" is a lot. The AI also acknowledges that Samantha is one of the most interesting characters in the series. Both things are true. Welcome to DCC.

Carl gives someone gonorrhea

Vrah's sister attacks Carl's party. Carl kills her using the Arrow of Enthusiastic Double Gonorrhea, a projectile that does exactly what the name suggests. This enrages Vrah, the famed veteran hunter. It also enrages Vrah's mother, who later ascends to become the god Diwata. Carl has given an alien warrior a venereal disease via arrow and created a divine enemy in the process. This sentence is accurate.

Maggie My dies for good

Maggie My returns, having killed Frank Q and possessed another crawler's body. Carl uses an anti-possession potion from Mordecai to break her control and kill her permanently. Good riddance. The Ring of Divine Suffering Frank cursed Carl with is still here and still secretly one of the best items in the dungeon.

Katia takes the Gate

This is the moment Katia goes from "party member" to "force of nature." Operating independently, she takes the real Gate underwater. When she activates it, the portal floods Floor 9's capital city with water, sharks, jellyfish, and explosives. She's not just surviving Floor 5. She's pre-gaming Floor 9. She's thinking four floors ahead. Katia is terrifying. Katia is also missing body parts and doesn't care.
