What's Happening in the Crawl
Book 8: A Parade of Horribles
Release date: May 12, 2026. Kindle, Audible, and hardcover (Ace Books). 704 pages. Covers Floors 10-11.
The Patreon chapters are done -- Dinniman posted all 98 chapters for early supporters. The book is now in final edits with Ace Books. The official release is locked for May 12. This is NOT a tentative date anymore.
What we know about the plot: races on Floor 10 (vehicle-based, upgrades between rounds), increasing glitches, and something the System AI calls "a coming-out party for the ages" on Floor 11. The official description says "the stakes are higher than they've ever been." Given that Book 7 included actual factional warfare, that's a high bar.

The TV show
Status: Active development. Decision imminent.
Universal International Studios and Seth MacFarlane's Fuzzy Door Productions acquired the rights in August 2024. Chris Yost (Thor: Ragnarok, The Mandalorian) is writing the scripts. As of February 2026, Dinniman confirmed that:
- Yost has written a few episodes
- A streaming service has acquired broadcast rights (not publicly announced which one)
- Contractual deadlines requiring a go/no-go decision are imminent
- CGI testing and budgetary discussions are happening
- The debate between live-action and animated is ongoing (hardcore fans want animated, general audience polling favors live-action)
At Emerald City Comic Con 2026 (March), Dinniman confirmed the live-action version is "still alive and well" and said they'd have news "in the next few weeks." Fuzzy Door is behind the Ted TV series, which should ease concerns about CGI quality for Princess Donut.
Dinniman has been clear that he's protective of the adaptation: he'll "only work with someone who's read it and enjoyed it and doesn't want to just snatch it up."
Book 9: The series finale
Dinniman confirmed in February 2026 that the series will end with Book 9, split across two volumes. No release timeline yet. He's previously described the final book as the one that "will kill me" to write. Given that Book 7 was already described as "the most difficult thing I've ever written," this tracks.
The series will conclude the story of the crawl. 10 books was the original plan, but Dinniman consolidated to 9 (in two parts). Nothing is set in stone on the split format, but the two-volume approach is confirmed.
Tabletop RPG and deck-builder
BackerKit crowdfunding launches: April 14, 2026.
Renegade Game Studios is making two games: a tabletop RPG and a deck-building game, both set in the DCC universe. The RPG will let you create your own crawlers and run your own dungeon sessions. The Renegade Discord server has passed 5,000 members for the TTRPG community alone.
Catacombs and Comedians (a comedy troupe of DCC fans) will be performing live sessions of the RPG at Gen Con in Indianapolis (July 29) and other events through 2026.
Webtoon and graphic novels
Webtoon print Vol. 1 releases May 19, 2026.
The DCC Webtoon adaptation by Aethon and Dinniman currently has 200,000+ subscribers and 4.7 million views. Season 2 is expected to return in coming months. The print collection of the first 14 episodes releases May 19, one week after Book 8.
The original graphic novel Dungeon Crawler Carl: Crocodile (a side story featuring Florin DuPont) raised over $2.6 million from nearly 27,000 backers on BackerKit. It ships to backers in March 2027.
Toys and collectibles
Playmates Toys figures launching ~July 2026.
Playmates has secured a licensing deal for character figures (Carl, Princess Donut, Mordecai, Mongo), trading cards, and other collectibles. Initial release is slated for around July 2026. This is the first physical merchandise beyond books and games.
Audio Immersion Tunnel
Soundbooth Theater is producing a separate full-cast audio production with original music, sound effects, and extra scenes. This is NOT a replacement for the Jeff Hays audiobooks -- it's a companion experience. Book 1 is available. Dinniman wrote the script with Ben Wolf.
