The Dungeon Crawler Carl TV Show

Broadcast status
Active development. Live-action. Decision imminent.
Universal International Studios. Seth MacFarlane's Fuzzy Door Productions. Chris Yost writing. A streaming service has acquired broadcast rights. Last updated: March 2026.

What we know

Universal International Studios and Seth MacFarlane's Fuzzy Door Productions acquired the TV rights to Dungeon Crawler Carl in August 2024. Chris Yost, whose credits include Thor: Ragnarok and The Mandalorian, is writing the scripts.

As of February 2026, author Matt Dinniman confirmed that Yost has written multiple episodes, a streaming service has acquired broadcast rights (not yet publicly announced), and contractual deadlines requiring a go/no-go decision are imminent. CGI testing and budget discussions are ongoing.

At Emerald City Comic Con in March 2026, Dinniman confirmed the live-action version is "still alive and well" and said to expect news "in the next few weeks."

Live-action vs. animated

This has been the biggest debate in the fandom. Hardcore fans have overwhelmingly pushed for animation, arguing that the scale of the dungeon, the alien species, a talking cat, and a baby velociraptor would be better served by animation. General audience polling has favored live-action.

The current direction is live-action. Fuzzy Door produced the Ted TV series for Peacock, which required a photorealistic CGI bear as the lead character for every scene. That's a strong proof of concept for rendering Princess Donut and Mongo.

Dinniman has been protective of the adaptation. He's said he'll "only work with someone who's read it and enjoyed it and doesn't want to just snatch it up." Given the series' tone, getting the humor right is just as important as the visuals.

FAQ

When will it come out?

No release date yet. The show is still in pre-production. Given the typical timeline for a show at this stage, the earliest realistic window would be late 2027 or 2028, but that's speculation. We'll update this page when a date is announced.

Which streaming service?

Not publicly announced. A streaming service has acquired broadcast rights, but neither the studio nor Dinniman have named it yet. Given Fuzzy Door's existing relationship with Peacock (Ted), that's the most common guess in the community.

Who's playing Carl?

No casting announcements. The community has strong opinions (check the subreddit for daily casting threads). Dinniman has not publicly named any actors he wants for any role.

Who's voicing Donut?

Unknown. The audiobook performance by Jeff Hays has been so iconic that many fans can't imagine anyone else. Whether the show will go in a different direction is one of the biggest open questions.

Will it be faithful to the books?

Dinniman's involvement and his stated protectiveness suggest it will be. However, adapting a 700+ page book into 8-10 TV episodes requires significant compression. The first season would likely cover Book 1 and possibly parts of Book 2. Some subplots will inevitably be cut or consolidated.

Will it cover all the books?

Way too early to say. If the first season is successful, the source material supports multiple seasons. The series has 8 books (9 when complete) with increasingly complex and cinematic set pieces. The later books -- faction wars, card battles, fairytale mazes -- would make incredible television.

I haven't read the books. Should I start now?

Yes. Immediately. Do not wait for the show. The audiobooks narrated by Jeff Hays are one of the best listening experiences in modern fiction. Start with Book 1. Give it three chapters.
