Who the Hell Is Everyone?
Main party
Carl is the protagonist. 27-year-old former U.S. Coast Guard rescue swimmer from Seattle. He was outside in his boxer shorts and his ex-girlfriend Beatrice's too-small pink Crocs when aliens destroyed every building on Earth. He entered the dungeon and has been fighting in his underwear ever since. His class is Compensated Anarchist (bombs and traps). Full profile.
Princess Donut the Queen Anne Chonk is Carl's ex-girlfriend Bea's Persian show cat. She became sapient after eating an Enhanced Pet Biscuit in the dungeon. She can talk, cast spells, and has the highest Charisma stat in the dungeon. She's the party leader, has 47 billion alien followers, and believes she is royalty. She is correct. Her page (she redesigned it herself).
Mongo is Donut's pet velociraptor. He hatched from an egg on Floor 2. He eats everything. Everything. Furniture, enemies, the concept of a menu. He started at 7 inches and grows significantly throughout the series. He has the Earthquake skill. SKREEE. Full profile.
Mordecai is Carl and Donut's guide/manager. He's an ancient Changeling — originally a Skyfowl (eagle-headed humanoid) who took an Exit Deal centuries ago. He's been forced to guide new species through the dungeon ever since. His form changes every floor. He's an expert alchemist, knows everything about the dungeon, and only tells you about 40% of it. He is very, very tired. Full profile.
Katia Grim is a former art professor from Reykjavik, Iceland. She joined Carl's party on Floor 3. Doppelganger race (can reshape her mass but struggles with faces). Monster Truck Driver class. She's smart, capable, and becomes one of the most powerful crawlers in the dungeon. First appears in Book 2. Full profile.
Characters you meet along the way
Samantha is a banished lesser deity of Unrequited Love who inhabits a decapitated Lika sex doll head. She joins Carl's party on Floor 5 (Book 4). She's the mother of Mrs. Ghazi. This description is accurate. Welcome to DCC.
Prepotente (Lorenzo De La Rosa) is a Boer goat who became sapient via Enhanced Pet Biscuit. Caprid race, Forsaken Aerialist class. He specializes in stacking debuffs. He considers Carl his best friend. Carl is not fully aware of the depth of this friendship. He broke an entire dungeon floor once. First appears in Book 2. Full profile.
Odette is a former crawler who became the galaxy's most-watched talk show host. She hosts "Dungeon Crawler After Hours with Odette." She has a complicated history with Mordecai and motivations that fans actively debate. Is she saving Carl or using him? Both readings work. Full profile.
Imani is a former CNA from Wenatchee, Washington. She survived the Meadow Lark retirement facility collapse in Book 1. Fire Spiritualist class, Obsidian Butterfly species. She becomes Guildmaster of Safehome Yolanda, a guild named after Yolanda Martinez who died protecting others on Floor 2. Full profile.
Beatrice is Carl's ex-girlfriend and Princess Donut's original owner. She died in the Transformation (the destruction of Earth's structures) in Book 1. Carl was outside chasing Donut when it happened, which is why he survived. Bea's death is part of Carl's motivation throughout the series.
Quasar is a Nullian (gray alien, 4.5 feet tall) attorney appointed as Carl's lawyer. He wears ties with novelty designs. The fact that Carl needs a lawyer inside a death dungeon tells you everything about how the Syndicate works. First appears around Book 5.
Elle is a 99-year-old former nursing home resident who became one of the most powerful crawlers in the dungeon. Blizzardmancer turned Tundra Princess turned Hailstorm Queen. Frost Maiden race. 4'6", floats above the ground. Foul-mouthed powerhouse pursuing a rare "four seasons" elemental build.
Cascadia is a Kua-tin (24-inch fish person) who serves as lead engineer and executive producer of Dungeon Crawler World: Earth. She designs the dungeon floors. Recently divorced. Increasingly stressed. Carl keeps destroying her floors. She is not handling it well.
Lucia Mar is a top-ranked crawler and antagonist who first appears around Book 3. She's powerful and dangerous. More details about her involve significant spoilers for later books, particularly Book 7. See the Book 7 recap for full details.
Factions and organizations
The Borant Corporation is the Kua-tin-owned megacorporation that runs the dungeon. They destroyed Earth to mine its resources, then turned the survivors' fight for survival into a reality TV show. They're currently in financial freefall after the Bloom's mismanagement. Think of them as the worst corporation you can imagine, but with fish people. Glossary entry.
The System AI runs the dungeon. It was purchased secondhand from Mantises who used it to run an amusement park. It gives snarky achievement notifications, has an intense fixation on Carl's bare feet, and calls itself "Daddy." It's either malfunctioning or awakening — possibly both. Its behavior escalates from quirky to existentially concerning across the series. Theory article.
Compensated Anarchist is Carl's combat class, chosen on Floor 3 (Book 2). It specializes in trap-making, bomb-building, and social manipulation. The "compensated" part means the system pays him to cause chaos. It's Carl's personality converted into a game mechanic. He later specializes into Agent Provocateur. Glossary entry.
