Who is Mongo?
Mongo is a velociraptor adopted by Carl and Donut on the Second Floor of the dungeon. When the Royal Court discovered a reward room with a pet selection, Donut chose Mongo -- a dinosaur who needed to bond with a crawler before the floor collapsed or he'd be left behind. In a frantic final sequence, Donut saved Mongo from a brindled vespa, and the bond was sealed.
He was not a strategic acquisition. He was not a calculated decision. Donut wanted a dinosaur and Donut gets what Donut wants.

What does Mongo do?
Mongo's primary function in the party is eating things. His secondary function is shrieking. His tertiary function is throwing up and then re-eating what he threw up. He does all three with tremendous enthusiasm and zero self-consciousness.
He is not a tank. He is not DPS. He is not support. He is a velociraptor-shaped garbage disposal with feelings.
That said, Mongo has proven useful in combat situations where "a velociraptor suddenly appears and eats someone's face" is a valid tactical contribution. Which, in the dungeon, is more often than you'd expect.
Why is Mongo the mascot of this site?
Because what Mongo does with food, this site does with DCC information. We consume it. We process it. We occasionally throw it back up in a slightly different form. We show no signs of stopping. Donut is concerned.
Also, Mongo shrieked with joy and began to vigorously devour the concept of being a website mascot. He then puked it up and ate it again. He found it acceptable.
Mongo facts
- Mongo must bond with a crawler to survive. He bonded with Donut, not Carl. This is correct because Donut is clearly the superior party member and also because she called dibs.
- Mongo's stomach is a mystery of dungeon biology. He has consumed items that should not be consumable. He has regurgitated items that should not have survived the trip. Science cannot explain Mongo. Science has stopped trying.
- In the audiobook, Jeff Hays voices Mongo's shrieks with the energy of a man who has fully committed to the bit. The shrieks are not subtle.
- Mongo once swallowed a reincarnated Tummyacher whole, to everyone's horror. Then barfed it up. The Tummyacher was fine. Mongo was fine. Nobody else was fine.

When does Mongo first appear in Dungeon Crawler Carl?
In Dungeon Crawler Carl, Mongo first appears near the end of Book 1, on the Second Floor, in chapter 46. After clearing a kobold fighting pit, Carl and Donut find a pet reward room with a key that opens only one of ten cages, and Donut insists on the one holding a small, pink-feathered dinosaur.
He must bond with a crawler before the floor collapses or he cannot come along. He bonds to Donut in chapter 47, after she saves him from a brindled vespa. That floor is covered in the Floor 2 guide.
What kind of dinosaur is Mongo?
In Dungeon Crawler Carl, Mongo is a Mongoliensis, the dungeon's name for what Earth calls a velociraptor; Odette identifies him that way at the end of Book 1. When Donut picks him he is about seven inches tall, with pink feathers, a beak full of small sharp teeth and a hooked claw on each foot.
Pets grow with every level until they are fully grown at level 15. By level 10 (Book 2) he is about the size of a mastiff, and at full size (Book 3) he is as tall as a pony. Whether he is only a velociraptor is argued in the Mongo theory (Book 4 spoilers).
