First appearance: Book 1 - Dungeon Crawler Carl · Class: Fire Spiritualist · Race: Obsidian Butterfly
Who is Imani?
Imani is a crawler ally in Dungeon Crawler Carl, first appearing in Book 1. Before the apocalypse she was a Certified Nursing Assistant in Wenatchee, Washington. When every building on Earth collapsed, she survived the Meadow Lark retirement facility falling on top of her -- one of the first set pieces of the series and one of the most quietly devastating.
Her pre-dungeon life shapes who she is in the dungeon. A CNA's whole job is taking care of people who cannot take care of themselves, usually under conditions that are bad and getting worse. Imani walks into the dungeon already knowing how to do that, and the dungeon is, as it turns out, an unusually extreme version of the same problem.
Class and species
- Class: Fire Spiritualist -- a religious support build centered on faith-driven fire magic and healing. Imani plays this role with genuine reverence, not aesthetics.
- Species: Obsidian Butterfly -- the racial choice she makes on Floor 3 when every crawler picks.
- Role: Support, healer, leader. In a party full of people who solve problems by breaking things, Imani solves problems by keeping the people around her alive long enough to think.
Guildmaster of Safehome Yolanda
When the guild system opens up on Floor 6 in Book 5, Imani founds Safehome Yolanda, named after Yolanda Martinez -- a woman who died protecting others on Floor 2 in the opening book. The naming is not incidental. It is the whole thesis of Imani's character: remember who got you here, keep doing what they would do, build a structure that outlasts the people who started it.
Safehome Yolanda becomes one of the most stable and ethically intact guilds on the floor -- at a point in the series where "ethically intact" is a rare and precious trait. Other guilds form alliances for leverage. Imani's forms them for protection.
Why Imani matters
In a series that keeps escalating -- bigger fights, higher stakes, more political intrigue -- Imani is the argument that the crawl is not just about surviving and is not just about winning. It's about who you become. Carl has his own version of this question and answers it loudly. Imani answers it quietly, in every scene she's in, without making a speech about it.
She's also a reminder of what the apocalypse actually costs. Most of the characters you love in DCC lost nearly everyone. Imani lost the people in her care, the people she was paid to keep alive. The grief under the competence is always visible if you look for it.

Key relationships
Carl
Imani and Carl orbit the same moral gravity. She's the one quietly figuring out how the dungeon actually works while Carl is blowing up the parts of it that annoy him. The guilds on Floor 6 put them on the same team, officially, for the first time.
AllyKatia
Two of the most competent, measured crawlers in the dungeon. When Imani and Katia are in the same room the probability of a good decision goes up.
